Abstract: Metformin, a biguanide derived from Galega officinalis, was first synthesized by Werner and Bell in 1922. Metformin was approved for the treatment of diabetes by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1994. It has since become the most widely used oral antidiabetic agent.
