The effects of milk intake and whole-body vibration exercise on bone mineral density in elderly women in nursing homes

Abstract: [Purpose] This study was designed to investigate the effects of lactose-free milk intake and whole-body vibration exercises on bone density in elderly female nursing home residents who had difficulty exercising outdoors and had not consumed milk. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty seven elderly women aged 70 or older from 3 nursing homes located in Incheon, Korea participated in the study. The experimental group (n=13) carried out whole-body vibration exercises and drank lactose-free milk, while the control group (… Show more

“…Mechanical vibrations produced by OVP can be transmitted to the whole body; when an individual is on the base of the platform that is turned on, generating whole body vibration (WBV) exercise [ 17 19 ]. WBV is well known as an alternative exercise modality for enhancing balance and flexibility [ 20 ], muscle activity, force and power [ 21 23 ], and improvement in bone mineral density [ 24 , 25 ]. Some authors [ 15 , 26 , 27 ] have discussed that the effects of the WBV exercises would be related to alteration on the plasma concentration of biochemical markers.…”

“…A randomized controlled study was performed on 27 women aged 70 years or older in a nursing home. The study exhibited that the consumption of lactose-free milk (190 mL/day containing 400 mg of calcium) for 12 weeks delayed the decline in BMD compared to the non-drinking group (Lee et al, 2017). Based on a systematic review by Sharp et al (2021), low-lactose dairy products are a valuable source of nutrients required to maintain normal bone status in lactose-intolerant patients.…”

“…Hence, women should strengthen their bone mass through exercises (Horowitz & Tommasini, 2018). Lee et al (2017b) have claimed that regular whole body vibration exercise could delay the progress of BMD loss of aged people in Korean nursing homes and regular exercise and adequate calcium intake could effectively prevent fractures. We also show that regular exercise and high BMI are protective factors to reduce the risk of OP in older women, which is consistent with the above-mentioned studies.…”
