The effects of nicotinic acid and xanthinol nicotinate on human memory in different categories of age

Abstract: The treatment effect of nicotinic acid and xanthinol nicotinate on human memory was compared with placebo in 96 healthy subjects. Forty-three subjects were young (35-45 years), 30 subjects middle aged (55-65 years) and 23 subjects were old aged (75-85 years). Pre- and post-treatment scores were measured on a battery of memory tasks, covering sensory register, short-term memory and long-term memory. The treatment regime was 1 dragee t.i.d. for 8 weeks. The administration of xanthinol nicotinate (500 mg, contain… Show more

“…In 10 out of 13 studies, there was an improvement on non-verbal intelligence tests in at least some of the children who received micro-nutrient supplements in double-blind studies Benton, 2001). There is also a series of well-controlled trials in which micro-nutrient supplementation resulted in improved mood (Benton et al, 1995(Benton et al, , 1997aSmidt et al, 1991), better memory (Deijen et al, 1992;Loriaux et al, 1985), attention (Benton and Cook, 1991) and eye-hand co-ordination (Bonke and Nickel, 1989).…”

“…In the same study, a correlation between the peripheral kynurenine/tryptophan ratio and anxiodepressive-like behavior in mice subjected to unpredictable chronic mild stress was found. Previous studies showed that treatment with nicotinate resulted in improved human sensory register and short-term memory, possibly by facilitating neurotransmission [26] . By binding with neuronal transporters, nicotinate can be utilized as cellular precursor for nicotinamide adenine nucleotide and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate synthesis, key events in regulating energy metabolism that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders [27][28][29] .…”

“…NA has been studied clinically since 1955 for its lipid-lowering activity; however, aging trials are scarce due to the undesirable skin flushing side effect [ 247 ]. In the healthy elderly, NA was able to decrease insulin sensitivity, with declines in triglyceride and cholesterol levels [ 104 ], and improve memory in an old study from 1985 [ 105 ]. NAM is widely used in skincare to combat skin aging with good results [ 248 ]; however, there are no other aging trials for NAM to our knowledge.…”
