The effects of preterm birth on mother–infant interaction and attachment during the infant's first two years

Abstract: The mother-preterm infant relationship is complex, and some relational patterns forecast greater psychological risk than others. It is important to decrease maternal stress and early separation in every possible way during hospitalization as well as after discharge.

“…As these children grow older, they are at risk of learning disabilities, which can in turn affect cognitive, motor and social competencies (Michele A Lobo & Galloway, 2013;Spittle, Orton, Anderson, Boyd, & Doyle, 2012). Studies indicate that preterm infants are also at risk of delayed play skills (Korja, Lehtonen, & Latva, 2012;Vig, 2007). They profit from caregivers' structuring and scaffolding of play, by which they become more engaged, more attentive and more persistent in play activities (Childress, 2011;Cress, Arens, & Zajicek, 2007).…”

“…45,98 It has been proposed that mothers' ability to respond to their preterm infants' needs appropriately might be negatively affected by long-term incubator care 3,99,100 or by mothers' high levels of stress. 15 Nevertheless, the results from our meta-analysis indicate that mothers of preterm children provide, on average, similar observed sensitive and responsive parenting for their preterm offspring as mothers with a full-term infant.…”
