The effects of research resources on international collaboration in the astronomy community

Abstract: This study examines whether an institution's research resources affect its centrality and relationships in international collaboration among 606 astronomical institutions worldwide. The findings support our theoretical hypotheses that an institution's research resources are positively related to its central position in the network. Astronomical institutions with superior resources, such as being equipped with international observational facilities and having substantial research manpower, tend to have more for… Show more

“…Astronomy is a highly international and globalised field [10,48]. This includes a high proportion of international collaborative research [49], not least because of the sharing of observatories located in specific parts of the world (e.g., ALMA in Chile). Astronomers have a strong common culture through their publication systems (three main journals and conference proceedings), societies and professional associations [10,48].…”

“…The overall increase in collaboration for SDG-related research is reflected in other analyses, including Sustainability Science (2015) and Nakamura et al (2019) , which both examined the state of sustainability science and the collaboration supporting it. This upward trend of collaboration at both author and institutional levels may be associated with the combination of changes cited by other studies from the social organization of the scientific community to better communications ( Jeong et al, 2014 ), increased research funding, and access to other resources, e.g., facilities and labor ( Chang and Huang, 2016 ), and possible changes in the type of research questions studied and approaches used ( Adams, 2012 ; Wagner, 2018 ), making globally relevant topics like SDG more amenable to collaborative investigation. Specific factors for fostering collaboration on sustainable development goal-directed research bear further investigation.…”

“…For the most part, professors in this study and other scholars (Berry & Taylor, 2014;Chang & Huang, 2016) argued the necessity to improve students' English skills because language affinity may strengthen individuals' connections, and, consequently, collaboration.…”

“…As such, the participation of students in international research projects expands their knowledge and network, where usually "sharing problem understandings and successful solutions" (Withycombe Keeler et al, 2016, p. 749) 64 are addressed. Also, Chang and Huang (2016) pointed out the importance of geographic closeness and cultural empathy for carrying out effective research collaborations in which professors and students can develop strong bonds. In this regard, Maldonado-Maldonado and Cantwell (2008) noted how academic collaboration between two borderland institutions, one from Mexico and one from the U.S., was framed by fears and desires related to history, in which "power, domination, subordination….and the border" influence such exchanges (p. 321).…”
