“…All studies conducted in the U.S. regarding custodial grandparentheaded families indicated that grandchildren raised by grandparents had a relatively lower academic performance (Cross & Day, 2008;Smithgall et al, 2009), and some grandchildren needed special education (Cross & Day, 2008). Differently, a study conducted in Korea did not find that grandchildren had a poor academic performance, even with 28.3% of these grandchildren ranked in the top 10 in their classes (Park & Lee, 2016). Cross and Day (2008) suggested that most of these grandchildren had positive attitudes towards school because they had opportunities to socialise with others, but that these grandchildren were not as interested in attending classes and/ or class content.…”

“…To evaluate its impacts, some studies regard grandparental care as being beneficial for deepening intergenerational relations, thus it is good for the psychological health, study performance and personalities of children. However, some scholars have found some negative impacts of grandparental care on child development (Dunifon, 2013; Goodman & Silverstein, 2002; Park & Lee, 2016; Wild & Gaibie, 2014; Zhou et al., 2015), which represents the controversial view in this debate.…”

“…At the grandchild level, a number of factors were associated with children's socioemotional, mental, and behavioral problems. These factors included the grandchild's gender (e.g., being a male), race (e.g., being White), age (e.g., being older), prior traumatic experiences, low self-esteem, low social support, and low life satisfaction (Bernedo, Fuentes, & Fernández, 2008;Kelch-Oliver, 2011;Park & Lee, 2016;Yorgason et al, 2014). At the grandparent level, grandparents' mental health and parenting practices were the two most significant predictors of grandchildren's behavioral problems (Goodman, 2012;Smith et al, 2018;Smithgall, Mason, Michels, LiCalsi, & Goerge, 2009).…”
