The effects of speech intelligibility on English scientific literature reading in Chinese open-plan offices

Abstract: A laboratory experiment was conducted to study the effects of speech intelligibility on English scientific literature reading performance in Chinese open-plan offices (both the occupants' native language and ambient speech noise were Chinese). The objective performance and subject perceptions of 20 participants were tested under different speech intelligibility conditions. The results highlight the significant negative impact of speech noise on occupants' performance. Moreover, a comparison of these results an… Show more

“…From a methodological perspective, a variety of scholarly work investigating the IEQ factors in relation to occupants' health, wellbeing and productivity are based on post occupation evaluation (POE) tools [19], such as BUS (Building Use Studies) Methodology [16,20], CBE (Centre for the Built Environmental) Berkeley Survey [21,22], Cost-Effective Open-Plan Environments (COPE) research [23], and BOSSA (Building Occupants Survey System Australia) [24]. Building on the IEQ related elements in these POE tools and findings from previous literature [8,11,25,26], this article focuses on the five IEQ aspects which affect the productivity of office workers, namely 1) thermal comfort [12,27,28], 2) indoor air quality [29,30], 3) lighting [31,32], 4) noise and acoustics [14,33,34], and 5) office layout [16,35].…”

“…The findings reveal that Chinese workers engaged in English scientific literature reading tasks are more sensitive to changes in speech intelligibility and have higher requirements for the acoustic environment. 6 In another study, indoor comfort quality problems were evaluated and classified in different office layouts by survey analysis. Different office layouts including closed, closed shared, high compartment, low compartment, and open compartments, were assessed.…”

“…When translating English and American literary allusions, if they do not penetrate the text, they will not achieve their effectiveness or even fail to express the enhanced effect of allusions on literary color. The translation process, which should be combined with the totality of the moral of the text, should search for the correct efficacy of allusions and analyze them in an integrated manner to achieve a perfect interpretation of English and American literary allusions in the text [28]- [29].…”
