The Effects of Sustained Release Metofluthrin on the Biting, Movement, and Mortality of Aedes aegypti in a Domestic Setting

Abstract: Abstract. The impact of a sustained release metofluthrin emanator and an allethrin-based mosquito coil on biting, movement and mortality of female Aedes aegypti was assessed in an apartment. In the room in which the metofluthrin emanator was activated, mosquito biting counts were reduced to zero. Metofluthrin also had a spillover effect, significantly ( P < 0.001) reducing biting counts in a neighboring room 1, 4, and 24 hours after the emanator was activated when compared with either the coil or control (untr… Show more

“…gambiae in light-traps were not reduced by metofluthrin but numbers resting were (Kawada et al, 2006). This indicates that part of its effect was through enhanced mortality rather than through repellency, as suggested by Rapley et al (2009) …”

“…The recent development of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides with high vapor action at ambient temperature, has led to the development of devices that work without the need to apply heat (Ogoma et al, 2012, Ujihara et al, 2004 Metofluthrin is a repellent that shows promise as an active ingredient when vaporized indoors, although it is possible that its main effect is as a killing agent (Rapley et al, 2009). When used in a paper-based emanatory, it reduced outdoor biting rates of Aedes canadensis and Ae.…”

“…Metoßuthrin provides effective spatial repellency against a wide variety of vector mosquitoes (Kawada et al 2004b(Kawada et al , 2005(Kawada et al , 2008 and also a quick knockdown, resulting in signiÞcant mosquito mortality (Ujihara et al 2004, Rapley et al 2009). Thus, the Off!…”

“…Because mosquitoes do not need to be retained in the trap, it can be more open, increasing mosquito access to the honey-soaked FTA cards and to insecticides, thus increasing killing power. Furthermore, nonrepellent insecticides can be used to treat the interior of the box trap or vaporized, nonrepellent insecticides such as dichlorvos and metofluthrin [51] can be placed inside the box to kill attracted mosquitoes. A perimeter line of surveillance and killing traps could be used to maximize surveillance while providing limited control.…”
