The effects of the child with Down syndrome on maternal stress

Abstract: This article examines the nature and correlates of stress in mothers of children with Down syndrome. In the first part of our study, we compared 27 mothers of children with Down syndrome with 15 mothers of children with heterogeneous causes of learning difficulty. Using Abidin's (1995) Parenting Stress Index (PSI), mothers in the Down syndrome group reported lower total child‐related stress levels, particularly concerning the degree to which the mother considers the child acceptable and reinforcing. “…In turn, such sociable, positive personalities seem to influence parents. When children are perceived to have more sociable, positive personalities, mothers are more likely to consider as "normal" their child's negative, acting out behaviors (Ly & Hodapp, 2002), as well as to experience less child-related stress and to feel more rewarded by their children (Hodapp, Ricci, Ly, & Fidler, 2003).…”

“…The well-being of parents of children with disabilities is related to a complex interaction of many factors such as child and parent characteristics, family systems and socio-economic status (Brinker et al, 1994), particularly the severity of child problem behaviours (Baker et al, 2003;Hodapp et al, 1998Hodapp et al, , 2003Sharpley et al, 1997). The theoretical cognitive model of stress and coping (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984) has been used to explain this interaction (Beresford, 1994a;Quine and Pahl, 1991).…”

“…Although developmental disabilities are diagnosed in early childhood, it is unlikely that the disabilities can be recovered and thus these disabilities do impose heavy burden on the caregivers and family (Lee & Park, 2013). The caregivers of CDD are, in particular, at risk for greater distress and are more vulnerable to negative outcomes such as depression, social isolation, and spousal relationship difficulties comparatively than the parents of children with other disabilities (Dunn, Burbine, Bowers, & Tantleff-Dunn, 2011;Hodapp, Ricci, Ly, & Fidler, 2003). Thus, it is very critical to investigate overall evaluation on life among the parents and family of CDD as LS reflects every positive and negative situation of life experienced by them.…”
