The effects of uterine artery embolization on ovarian reserve

Abstract: Ovarian reserve appears to be affected by UAE in premenopausal women. However, younger ovaries (according to biological ovarian age) exhibit a greater capacity for recovery after ovarian damage. Therefore, larger studies are needed for more conclusive results.

“…Previous studies have shown that serum hormone levels are predictive biomarkers of ovarian reserve, of which AMH and basal FSH are the most effective and commonly used. To the best of our knowledge, few studies have investigated serum AMH levels after UAO + M. Similar to our study, Kim et al . evaluated the effects of uterine artery embolization (UAE) for symptomatic uterine fibroids on ovarian reserve based on AMH, and reported significant decreases at 3 and 12 months postoperatively.…”

“…Our study showed statistically significant trends of a decrease at 3 months but recovery at 6 months after UAO + M in both AFC and ovarian volume, and these trends were more prominent in the right ovary. Similarly, Kim et al . evaluated the effects of UAE for symptomatic uterine fibroids on ovarian reserve, and found a significant decrease in AFC at 3 months, which then rebounded at 12 months after UAE.…”

“…The effect of this minimally invasive procedures on fertility is debatable [ 35 ]: nowadays no established data are available even if Kim et al [ 36 ] reported 3 cases of uncomplicated pregnancies in 69 patients treated with radiofrequency ablation. Ovarian reserve appears to be affected by UAE in premenopausal women [ 37 ].…”

“…Aligning with Raba's study, we also did not find a significant difference in terms of mean FSH levels among the groups. Ovarian reserves might be altered after procedures affecting ovarian and/or uterine blood supply . The main blood supply of the ovaries is from the ovarian artery which originates from the aorta.…”

The collateral circulation between the uterine and ovarian arteries provides an additional source of blood supply for the ovaries.…”
