“…No structural damage to the myofilaments is evident in any of the irradiated muscles. Bergstrom and Salmi (1962) observed similar vacuolization of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the vertebrate striated muscle exposed to 30 000 R. Brandt, Frank, Giradier and Reuben (1962) showed that, if crayfish muscle fibres are soaked in normal Ringer solution for 20 min after pre-soaking in K+ Ringer, the sarcoplasmic reticulum appeared swollen. Radiation is known to affect membrane potential and induce potassium leakage in the vertebrate muscle fibres (Darden 1960).…”
