The effects of varying wall conditions, minor and major radii on confinement properties in ISX-B

Abstract: The Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) data base from which the energy confinement time scaling was derived for neutral-beam-heated discharges has been enlarged. Results obtained by using a non-gettered vacuum vessel and different minor and major radii are now included. Energy confinement times improve and a density dependence is introduced, if gettering is not employed. There is an associated increase in impurity radiation. A comparison of confinement properties obtained by using two minor radii (∼ 19 cm and … Show more

“…Therefore, shifting the plasma to the high field side generally inhibits the transition to the RI mode regime despite the high radiation level (see also the detailed discussion in Refs [21,22]). Similar effects of the plasma position on confinement have also been observed in ISX-B [23].…”

“…It should be noted that in ASDEX [12] neon seeding and low gas feed rates were agents for allowing access from the SOC to the IOC and that in ISX-B it was possible to generate a density dependent scaling in auxiliary heated plasmas by either increased radiation or plasma position displacements [14]. An example of SOC-IOC transition in TEXTOR-94 achieved by gas feed control is shown in Fig.…”

“…Earlier studies in ISX-B showed, however, that some density dependence for rg in gettered discharges is restored by a careful positioning of the discharge [18] when TE is observed to approach the empirical value found in ungettered discharges and in gettered discharges with controlled neon puffing (the so-called Z-mode):…”

“…Figure 14 shows the normalized confinement data for beryllium gettered discharges, and Fig. 15 shows a corresponding plot of ISX-B data with titanium gettering [18]. There is no evidence to suggest that the effect of beryllium gettering on confinement is in any way different from the effects of titanium and chromium gettering.…”
