The effects of vitamin C supplementation on pre-eclampsia in Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda: a randomized placebo controlled clinical trial

Abstract: BackgroundOxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. Supplementing women with antioxidants during pregnancy may reduce oxidative stress and thereby prevent or delay the onset pre-eclampsia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementing vitamin C in pregnancy on the incidence of pre-eclampsia, at Mulago hospital, Kampala, Uganda.MethodsThis was a (parallel, balanced randomization, 1:1) placebo randomized controlled trial conducted at Mulago hospital, Department… Show more

“…Among women with low baseline intake, two Cochrane reviews did not find a significant effect of vitamin C and/or E supplementation [ 75 , 82 ]. Reviews covered 19 trials examining vitamin C and/or E [ 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 ], including one secondary analysis of smokers [ 100 ]. Three trials were published in 2014 or later [ 84 , 92 , 100 ].…”

“…Antioxidants Vit C and Vit E, clinical trials failed as there was no therapeutic benefit among PE women (40, 41). This could be due to inability of these compounds to penetrate mitochondrial membranes to target mitochondrial mediated oxidative stress.…”

“…In support of this, the production of reactive oxygen species was found to be higher during the human pregnancy-related hypertensive disorder preeclampsia (PE), which is believed to result from poor trophoblast invasion (Cross, Tolba, Rondelli, Xu, & Abdel-Rahman, 2015). Thus, antioxidant therapy has been used during pregnancies (Ly et al, 2015) to reduce oxidative stress and, thereby, the incidence of PE (Kiondo et al, 2014;Rani & Naidu, 2016;Rumbold & Crowther, 2005).…”
