The effects of vitamin D supplementation on proatherogenic inflammatory markers and carotid intima media thickness in subjects with metabolic syndrome: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial

Abstract: Vitamin D supplementation improved some proatherogenic inflammatory markers in subjects with metabolic syndrome. No changes of high sensitivity C-reactive protein and carotid intima media thickness were shown after 16 weeks.

“…Most of the participants were women. Of the 22 publications, 19 were population-based observational studies including 4 prospective studies [18,31,33,34], 8 cross-sectional studies [15-17, 19, 23, 24, 26, 27] and 7 case control studies [20-22, 25, 28-30] and 3 studies were randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) [1,7,32]. Overall, three randomized clinical trials comprising 99 patients including premenopausal women [1], overweight type 2 diabetic patients with CHD [7], and metabolic syndrome [32] Also, all of the trials studies were considered to be of higher quality.…”

“…In another study, the consumption of flaxseed oil for 90 d reduced CIMT in obese and overweight non-diabetic elderly patients (34) . However, vitamin D supplementation for 16 weeks did not change CIMT in patients with metabolic syndrome (35) . CIMT is a prognostic predictor of future cardiovascular events.…”

“…Since vitamin D de ciency has also been linked to adverse cardiovascular outcomes and cancer (14,31), several clinical trials with supplementation have been conducted to determine if improvement in cancer and cardiovascular outcomes occurred. Most trials have shown null results; one evaluated vitamin D supplementation and IMT (32) and a large randomized double-blind trial showed no improvement in cardiovascular outcomes or cancer after supplementation with high doses of vitamin D (2000 UI) (33). These results suggest that vitamin D might be related to cardiovascular health but not through a causal relationship.…”
