The Efficacy of Banana Peel Activated Carbon in the Removal of Cyanide and Selected Metals from Cassava Processing Wastewater

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of banana peel activated carbon as an adsorbent in the removal of cyanide and selected metals from fresh cassava wastewater collected from the discharge pit. Fresh banana peels were dried, adequately prepared and treated with 0.1 M HCl. Batch experiments were conducted by varying the adsorbent dose from 5 -20 g and contact time between 10 -360 minutes to determine the optimum percentage removal of cyanide -CN and selected metals (lead -Pb, chromium … Show more

“…The Langmuir Cm parameter is related to the maximum adsorption capacity and KL or b with the adsorbent-adsorbate interaction forces. logqeq = log Kf + (1/n) logCeq (10) In which: Ceq or Ce is the concentration in the equilibrium and qeq or o Qe is the quantity adsorbed in the equilibrium per unity mass of the adsorbent. KF and n are two parameters of Freundlich model.…”

“…Generally, studies that develop alternative activated carbons aim to remove contaminants from the aquatic environment, among the studies of removal; the most studied contaminants are the toxic metals [10]. However, some agricultural wastes were not evaluated for their transformation into activated carbon and consequent removal capacity.…”

“…The use of locally sourced agricultural by-products like moringa, orange peel, cassava peel, orange peel, banana peel, plum leaves, guava fruits etc. [10,11], natural clay minerals [12], composite nano-fibrous material [13] and carbon as materials for adsorbent have gained wide application for the removal of pollutants and heavy metals.…”
