The efficacy of daily snack replacement with oligofructose-enriched granola bars in overweight and obese adults: a 12-week randomised controlled trial

Abstract: Oligofructose is a prebiotic dietary fibre obtained from chicory root inulin. Oligofructose supplementation may affect satiety, food intake, body weight and/or body composition. The aim was to examine the efficacy of oligofructose-supplemented granola bars on the following weight management outcomes: satiety, energy intake, body weight and body composition in overweight or obese adults. In all, fifty-five adults with overweight or obesity (thirty-six females/nineteen males; age: 41 (sd 12) years; 90·6 (sd 11·8… Show more

“…160,161 Oligofructose ingested daily by 29 adults for 12 weeks in a granola bar formulation, reduced by 0•3 (sd 1•2) kg lean mass and waist circumference by -2•2 (sd 3•6) cm, with a concomitant intake and increase satiety in adults over a 12-week intervention 162. However, not all studies have suggested benefits.…”

“…A control group of normal-weight subjects was not considered since we were interested in deepening the study about the influence of odor exposure toward low energy dense foods, promoting healthy eating in morbidly obese subjects. Thus, a comparison between two BMI groups would not have added information accordingly to the aim of the present study (Bowen et al, 2007; Pol et al, 2018). Moreover, only obese women were recruited in the current research since previous studies suggested the existence of sex-related differences in the perception of odors, reporting that women are usually more sensitive to odors than men and outperforming them in olfactory function (Brand and Millot, 2001; Lundstrom et al, 2005; Hummel et al, 2007; Proserpio et al, 2017b).…”

“…Oligofructose is a soluble fructan derived from chicory in the same way as inulin (Flores-Maltos et al 2016;Pol et al 2018). The main difference is the addition of a hydrolysis step after extraction.…”
