The efficacy of dietary avoparcin for improving the performance of growing-finishing beef cattle

Abstract: The response to avoparcin in cattle diets was examined in two trials. In trial 1 compound diets containing 0, 15, 30 or 60 mg/kg avoparcin were given to 32 British Friesian bulls from 231 kg body weight to slaughter at a mean body weight of 422 kg. In trial 2 diets containing 0, 15, 30 or 45 mg/kg avoparcin and composed of equal portions of dry matter (DM) from grass silage and compound food were given to 64 British Friesian steers over a 12-week period from 258 kg body weight to 340 kg body weight. There was a… Show more

“…Among the ionophore antibiotics, RO22--6924/004, narasin and salinomycin have shown excellent promise and are reportedly effective at lower dosage levels than lasalocid or monensin for improving feed efficiency and rate of gain of feedlot cattle (Dinusson et al, 1979;Potter et al, 1979;Thonney et al, 1983; 10[ ~.NIIXl Nl al N~' ~N Merchen and Berger, 1985). Avoparcin, a 1980), has been shown to be similar to monencattle (Johnson et al, 1979;Dyer et al, 1980;Cuthbert et al, 1984). Thiopeptin, a sulfurcontaining peptide (Miyairi et al, 1972), is an effective inhibitor of S. bovis (Muir and Barreto, 1979), and, therefore, effective in controlling lactic acidosis in cattle (Muir et al, 1980).…”

“…Antibiotic growth promoters such as avoparcin are used widely in diets of poUltry and pigs to improve efficiency of utilisation of energy and protein components of the feed. Improved feed conversion ratios and Iiveweight gains have also been demonstrated in beef cattle on a range of diets including silage, concentrates, and low-quality roughages with and without protein and energy supplements (Cuthbert & Thickett 1984;Dodemaide et aI. 1988;Gulbransen & Standfast 1988;Lindsay et al 1988).…”
