The Efficacy of Phytogenic Feed Additives in Poultry Production: A Review

Abstract: Over the years, the growing concerns about the negative impact of anti-microbial growth promoters has triggered researches into the use of phytogenic feed additives in poultry production in order to ascertain better performance of birds as well as safety in the food chain. Phytogenic feed additives are compound derived from varieties of plants, its parts, extracts and essential oils which possess active substances that are of significant importance. Some of its functions include anti-microbial and anti-oxidati… Show more

“…This was confirmed by Zorzetto et al [ 73 ], who linked the presence of pinocarvone and related moieties in pharmaceutical stimulants and exploratory remedies used in the treatment of respiratory diseases. Further analysis revealed a link between the presence of trans-pinocarveol and stomachic and gastroprotective activity, enhanced digestive action and antimicrobial properties, displaying its potential in animal gut physiology improvement as a prebiotic in fusions in veterinary pharmacology [ 74 ].…”

“…The ban on the use of anti-microbial growth promoter has triggered the use of plant-based additives in livestock production. Thus, the use of feeds as well as additives that are safe and of high nutritive qualities are crucial for optimum performance of livestock (Oladeji et al, 2019). Hence, much recognition is gained by phytogenic feed additives in the poultry industry as it does not only contribute to the nutrient requirements of the birds but also act as perfect substitute for premixes, antibiotics and antioxidants (Suganya et al, 2016).…”

“…The PFA can be available in different forms such as herbs, spices, essential oils, or oleoresin ( Singh and Gaikwad, 2020 ). The pure forms PAF and their different combinations have been used in many in vitro and in vivo experiments to reveal the immune-potential, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anthelmintic, coccidiostats, antiviral, and antibacterial properties ( Oladeji et al., 2019 ). The useful effects of PFA on poultry may come from feed intake and activation of digestive secretions ( Windisch et al., 2008 ; Pirgozliev et al., 2019 ).…”
