The efficacy of selamectin in the treatment of naturally acquired aural infestations of Otodectes cynotis on dogs and cats

Efficacy and safety of imidacloprid 10% plus moxidectin 2.5% spot-on in the treatment of sarcoptic mange and otoacariosis in dogs: results af a European field study

The performance of selamectin spot-on in the present study was very similar to that reported by Six et al (2000) and Shanks et al (2000). In a laboratory trial with naturally mangeinfested dogs, Fourie et al (2003) demonstrated a 100% clinical cure rate in 30 Sarcoptes-infested dogs even 22 days after a single application of the minimum dose rate of 0.1ml/kg imidacloprid/moxidectin spot-on and 0.05 ml/kg selamectin spot-on, respectively.…”

“…In one dog of each group clinical signs did not improve during the observation period: they were considered treatment failures. Shanks et al (2000) found a >93% mite reduction after a single application and a 100% mite reduction after two applications of the recommended minimum dose of selamectin spot-on (6 mg/kg). Six et al (2000) who treated 122 dogs twice with selamectin spot-on at the recommended dose rate in the course of an European Union/United States multicentric field trial found a >95% parasitological cure rate and a reduction of the incidence of pruritus from 96 to 100% before treatment to 3-5% at day 60 after the first treatment, and a reduction in the number of dogs showing papules from >82% to 6-11%.…”

“…Systemically acting macrocyclic lactones like ivermectin, milbemycin oxime and moxidectin have been reported to be efficacious after oral or parenteral application and various treatment protocols have been suggested (Scheidt et al 1984;Miller et al 1996;Wagner and Wendlberger 2000). Ivermectin, selamectin and moxidectin have been shown to be efficacious after topical application (Paradis et al 1997;Shanks et al 2000;Six et al 2000;Fourie et al 2003); however, only the two products being compared in this paper are licensed.While ivermectin should not be used in collies and sheepdogs due to the elevated risk of CNS induced side effects like ataxia, tremors, mydriasis, salivation, depression, and even coma and death (Curtis 2004), the selamectin and imidacloprid/moxidectin products are reported to be safe after label-conform use. Mange diagnosis based on skin scrapings only may lead to false-negative results because of the difficulty of detecting mites (Urquart et al 1996).…”

Previously, selamectin (Revolution ® , Stronghold ® , Pfizer) was demonstrated to have efficacy against ear mites in cats (Thomas 1999, Shanks et al 2000, Six et al 2000, and this product was used as the positive control treatment. Veterinarians and staff from six veterinary clinics (U.S.) participated in the study.…”
