The efficiency of municipal waste management systems in the environmental context in the European Union

Abstract: Performance criteria of non-energy materials hold an important place in the system of indicators of the green growth strategy. Management of generated municipal waste and its effectiveness depend to a large extent on the ratio of the amount of incinerated, recycled or composted waste to the amount taken to landfills. This ratio is tied to the level of economic development of the country. The conducted research revealed several regularities in the management of generated municipal waste. As the country's econom… Show more

“…The third essential stage, i.e., the efficiency of waste recycling systems, remains unexamined. However, previous research indicates that the efficiency of this stage is significantly higher in developed countries compared to developing countries, where the majority of waste is not recycled but rather transported to landfills (Ginevičius, 2022). Therefore, the results obtained in this study should be viewed as representing the partial analysis and evaluation of production and consumption issues.…”

“…This is to encourage energy transformation initiatives. Previous research has emphasized the impact of subsidies on the transformation until 2050 [60], as well as the theoretical implications of innovation [61][62][63][64]. This article focuses on avoiding subsidies, especially in the short term.…”

“…This is a positive trend that the awareness of food packaging and waste disposal has increased in recent years, especially among younger generations of consumers (Cichocka et al, 2020). In general, there is a strict relationship in waste management within the EU -higher efficiency is found in the more economically developed countries even though the amount of municipal waste generated in them is higher too (Ginevičius, 2022).…”
