The electro-optic effect in proustite

Abstract: The low-frequency unclamped electro-optic coefficients of proustite have been measured at an optical wavelength of 0.6328 ~m. The results show that r2= is comparable to that of lithium niobate, r~ 3 and r33 are considerably lower. The maximum theoretical value is calculated at 10.8 • 10 -~2 m/V about three times the largest measured coefficient value.

“…The contribution of crystal inhomogeneities to reduction in efficiency was determined by first examining other factors which result in a difference between the theoretical and experimental values of efficiency (as noted earlier, it is not possible to make a direct quantitative assessment of effects due to inhomogeneities). In evaluating the crystal, we have assumed that values given by Chemla, Kupecek & Schwartz (1973) and Trevelyan (1969) for electro-optic and nonlinear coefficients of proustite refer to a crystal of (near) optimum qualities.…”

“…The latest results [222] show that Ag3SbS3 (pyrargyrite, which can be grown in large single crystals similarly to Ag3AsS3 (proustite) [223]) is a suitable low absorption material for use as a standard in the accurate determination of nonlinear optical susceptibilities at 10.6 pm. Similarly to the hitherto used standard materials such as quartz, KDP and ADP, which have recently been studied exhaustively [221], crystalline AgaSbS 3 is suitable for pulsed parametric oscillation in the infra-red, and up-conversion.…”
