The Electrokinetic Cross-Coupling Coefficient: Two-Scale Homogenization Approach

Abstract: By the two-scale homogenization approach we justify a two-scale model of ion transport through a layered membrane, with flows being driven by a pressure gradient and an external electrical field. By up-scaling, the electroosmotic flow equations in horizontal thin slits separated by thin solid layers are approximated by a homogenized system of macroscale equations in the form of the Poisson equation for induced vertical electrical field and Onsager's reciprocity relations between global fluxes (hydrodynamic and… Show more

“…where k r is the rock permeability, η r is the dynamical viscosity of the pore fluid, σ r is the effective density of the electric conductivity, F is the dimensionless tortuosity. For sandstones, F 0.001 [8,16]. In [17,18], a mathematical model and a computer code are developed for calculation of the electric conductivity σ r of a saturated rock.…”

“…It is proved in Amirat and Shelukhin [2] and Shelukhin et al [23] that interfacial charges may appear due to ion transport in a fluid dielectric medium. The nature of this charge is the Maxwell-Wagner polarization which appears due to a difference in dielectric permittivities between the composite components.…”
