The elimination of errors due to evaporation of the solute in the determination of surface tensions

Abstract: The subject has been recently treated by the author in a paper published in French in the Bull. soc. chim. Belges 66, 476 (1957). That paper has now been trans lated, revised, and completed for the présent publication. ^ A similar evaporation phenomenon créâtes tears on the walls of a glass contain ing a strongly alcoholic liquor. Merigoux (2) reminds us that this phenomenon is known by the name of "James Thomson's pearls" or by the name of "vin capi teux des Hébreux". Solomon said therefore: "Do not drink win… Show more

“…Provided that  is independent of n, Eq. (50) suggests that if  S is plotted against C×exp(nCH 2 /kBT), where the value CH 2 /kBT = 1.04 for W|A is used, data for all homologues must fall on a single master curve. This is demonstrated in Fig.…”

“…Odor-triggering activity is an important part of specific signaling pathways in olfactory system, an evolutionally evolved remarkable molecular sensing mechanism. [2] Features of molecules which can act as odorant-triggers are typically considered in terms of molecular weight, geometry, chirality, flexibility (vibrational frequencies and rotation), as well as biochemical (enzymatic) influence. Applications of aroma molecules are currently related to their biological activities (odor, antioxidant, antimicrobial).…”

“…Alcohol evaporates in the hot region of the surface and condenses in the cold one. It has been shown theoretically (5) and experimentally (6) that alcohol evaporation increases the surface tension. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that alcohol condensation has nearly the opposite effect.…”
