The elusiveness of inclusiveness : A practice-based perspective on health and sustainability in urban food practices

Abstract

Effective urban food governance requires multiple pathways of transition to a healthy and sustainable food system. (this thesis) 2.Promoting sustainable food consumption practices requires a theory of power. (this thesis) 3.A theoretical lens follows from a hypothesis. 4.The practical experience gained during a PhD conducted at a University of Applied Sciences adds significant value to the PhD trajectory. 5.Working from home fulltime hampers successful PhD writing.'I made it through another day' (Sia, 2021). This has been the soundtrack of the second half of my PhD, written during years with extensive periods of lockdown that were not easy. It has been quite the ride, and I have a lot of people to thank for making it to the finish line. Thanks to my dear promotors, Peter and Sigrid. I could not have dreamed of a better supervisory team! When I started my PhD, I was quite insecure about my capacities. I really appreciated your encouragements to express my voice more clearly and trust myself and my ideas. Peter, you've been in it with me since my MSc thesis back in 2015. You were always a rock, grounding me along the way. Sigrid, it's been such a pleasure working with you! Your endless energy is very inspiring and I very much appreciate the mentor role you have taken up in coaching me, introducing me to many new people and projects, and now also to a great postdoc position where I'm very happy to continue our collaboration.My lovely, lovely Almere people! I could absolutely not have done this without you. Claudia, Koen, Jan-Eelco, thank you for all the fun we had when we still had an office! Such good times in Lancaster, Torino, and at our very own Almere conference. Koen, thanks for the many chats in particular through Teams over the past two years -it's really helped me cope with everything. Jan-Eelco, special thanks for getting me outside of my house during lockdown for our walks -I hope we will continue this in the future! Claudia, the choice for you as my paranymph was very easy to make: such an honour to watch you develop from my intern to the social practice theorist you know are! Thanks for being my paranymph and friend  My other Almere colleagues from team TPO -Dinand, Harrison, Nicolette, Brigitta, Henk, Pat, thank you for sharing the office with me and bringing joy (and plants, Brigitta!) to my office life.
