The emergence of linguistic form in time

Abstract: Linguistic forms are shaped by forces operating on vastly different time scales. Some of these forces operate directly at the moment of speaking, whereas others accumulate over time in personal and social memory. Our challenge is to understand how forces with very different time scales mesh together in the current moment to determine the emergence of linguistic form.

“…Other authors (Cole 1996: 179, MacWhinney 2005 have asked: What are the forces that cause these frames to "interanimate" or "mesh"? The way to find out would be to test and extend the useful suggestions of authors like Newell (1990), Cole (1996: 184-185), MacWhinney (2005), Lemke (2000: 279-286) and Uryu et al (2014).…”

“…Cognitive science must address both the nature of structure and its emergence. Emergent structures have been identified in a broad range of areas including language acquisition (Hollich, 2006;MacWhinney, 2005;Regier, 2006;Jones & Smith, 2005), categorization (Quinn, 2006;Younger & Johnson, 2006;Yu, 2006), perceptual integration (Burnham & Dodd, 2004;Fingelkurts, Fingelkurts, Krause, Möttönen, & Sams, 2003;Johnson, 2004), mathematical reasoning (Empson & Turner, 2006;Rasmussen, Stephan, & Allen, 2004;Siegler, 2005), and gaze following (Moore, 2006;Triesch, Teuscher, Deák, & Carlson, 2006). In all of these cases, the cognitive system appears to take a sudden leap forward in some important sense (e.g., greater abstraction, generality, or efficiency).…”
