The emergence of mecC methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: HighlightsA novel mecA homologue, mecC, confers methicillin resistance to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).mecC MRSA produce negative results with common diagnostic tools.Reported from throughout Western Europe. Recent increase in Denmark.Found in a range of host species and may pose a zoonotic risk to humans.

“…This divergence indicates that it had an independent evolution, although it is not yet known how it evolved. It also indicates that although the earliest strain found was from 1975, this type may have been circulating for an even longer period [97,98]. This appears similar to what is observed for mecA-carrying SCCmec elements in coagulasenegative staphylococci; however, for mecC of course fewer strains are available to date, and the diversity is still difficult to assess.…”

“…It was discovered because it was negative on mecA PCR but phenotypically resistant. Although this SCCmec type is associated mainly with CC130, it also has been found in CC1943 and CC425 as well as in many other CCs, including CC599 and CC59 [97,98,99].…”

“…Resistance to β-lactams in S. aureus is caused by the production of the modified penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a or PBP2'), which is encoded by the mecA or mecC gene located on the mobile genetic element SCCmec (Paterson et al, 2014). Based on multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and sequencing of repeating units within the staphylococcal protein A (spa) gene, MRSA isolates can be assigned to clonal complexes (CC) and spa types (t-types), which allows their classification as hospital-associated (HA)-, community-associated (CA)-or livestock-associated (LA)-MRSA.…”

“…As already suggested for the mecA gene, we can probably infer that the origin of the mecC gene is also among the CoNS (Tsubakishita et al, 2010;Couto et al, 2013). Although mecC gene detection is rare and reported only in Europe so far, this gene is a potential diagnosis problem and triggers several issues for future studies (Paterson, Harrison, Holmes, 2014).…”
