The Emerging Boon of Information and Communication Technology in Multidisciplinary Cancer Care: A Force Multiplier With a Human Touch

Abstract: Cancer care (CC) is incredibly complex and requires the coordination of multiple disciplines for optimal outcomes. Historically, this has been accomplished with multidisciplinary tumor boards (MDTBs), but the benefits, while perhaps intuitive, have not always been demonstrated with sufficient research robustness and validity. We hypothesize that this difficulty in demonstrating the benefit of MDTBs may be related to a delay in decision-making and operationalizing those decisions. The history and value of MDTBs… Show more

“…We analyzed three factors/issues that influence the RTT duration: a) patients with advanced stage IV disease/comorbidities; b) patients who had difficulty with compliance of the rigorous daily treatment requirements during EBRT or with brachytherapy; c) during the first year of our MRI based brachytherapy learning curve; and d) a combination of one or more of those three items. These findings prove our previous hypothesis [ 4 ] that technology alone cannot solve the socio-demographic issues. A human touch is always needed [ 30 ].…”

“…Secondly, technology can have a large role in offering advancement in the clinic. Since both efforts involved the application of information and communication technology (ICT) in the form of SmartClinic, the expansion of the abilities of our human practitioners is noted [ 4 ]. ICT seems likely to play a large role in our clinical management of patients for the future.…”

“…The use of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in patient care and treatment decision-making is not a recent development in the oncological healthcare setting [1]. MDTs help in improving team-based cancer care, as advances in individual specialties occur, rapid sharing of the expertise to improve outcomes becomes possible [2]. However, involving patients/families in extensive discussion during MDT meetings is a more recent phenomenon to address patients' needs; secure coordination among professionals to prevent clinical errors; potentially improve outcomes such as survival, local control, and quality of life; and enhance patients' social and psychological well-being for treatment and decision-making in difficult cases.…”

“…In this scientific art of making clinical decisions for our patients, one often has to weigh (a) the scientific evidence; (b) the statistical versus the actual, practical real-world clinical impact of studies; (c) the individual patients and his/her family’s circumstances and choices; (d) geography and infrastructure options available for the patient and the facility; and, finally, (e) cost-benefit and risk-benefit considerations. Furthermore, the importance of patient and family-focused care and fully involving patients and families in decision-making in the process is gaining momentum [ 2 ] in this age of expanding information technology use in health care [ 3 ], extended use of telemedicine, and considering public health perspectives including methods to overcome disparities in healthcare delivery to rural and socioeconomically deprived populations (RSEDPs).…”
