The emerging role of maxillofacial radiology in the diagnosis and management of patients with complex periodontitis

Abstract: Contemporary periodontal therapy has evolved to become more interdisciplinary and increasingly involves more complex treatments, including bone and soft-tissue regenerative procedures. Therapeutic options require an imaging modality or combination of techniques that are capable of providing a diagnostic osseous baseline and facilitating quantification of smaller increments of bony change, both loss and additive, which are comparable over time. Intra-oral and panoramic radiography are the modalities most common… Show more

“…The severity of periodontal disease and the associated risk of tooth loss are higher in molars than in non‐furcated teeth (Bäumer et al., 2019; Hirschfeld & Wasserman, 1978; Papapanou, Wennstrom, & Grondahl, 1989). Therefore, correct diagnosis of furcation involvement (FI) is crucial for both prognosis estimation and optimization of treatment strategies (Avila‐Ortiz, De Buitrago, & Reddy, 2015; Scarfe, Azevedo, Pinheiro, Priaminiarti, & Sales, 2017).…”

“…Currently, conventional and digitized periapical, bitewing, and panoramic radiographs (DPT) are used as an adjunct to clinical assessment in diagnosing periodontitis (Christiaens et al, 2018;Goodson et al, 1984). The most frequent radiographs to identify alterations in alveolar bone are periapical (PA) and bitewing radiographs (Scarfe, Azevedo, Pinheiro, Priaminiarti, & Sales, 2017).…”
