The Emerging Roles of CIB1 in Cancer

Abstract: Calcium and integrin-binding protein 1 (CIB1) is an EF-hand calcium binding protein, which is involved in many cellular processes, including calcium signaling, cell survival and proliferation, cell migration, cell adhesion and apoptosis. A number of studies have found that CIB1 is ubiquitously expressed and is related to various human diseases, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), cardiac hypertrophy and male infertility. The mechanism of CIB1 in human diseases is still not clear, although multiple functi… Show more

“…1 B). Human CIB1 has since emerged as a regulator of diverse cellular processes including migration, adhesion, proliferation, and cell death/survival (Leisner et al, 2016; Wang et al, 2017). We first assessed the biochemical impact of the mutations by measuring endogenous CIB1 mRNA and protein levels in leukocytes.…”

“…There is increasing evidence showing CIB1 serve critical roles in cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration, and can promote tumor growth and angiogenesis. [26] Another tumor-promoting gene IFITM1 is required for the progression of colorectal cancer. [27] The downregulation of these 2 tumor-promoting genes could also explain the trastuzumab-mediated therapeutic effects.…”

“…Calcium and integrin-binding protein 1 (CIB1), first discovered in 1997 as a novel interacting protein of the integrin aIIb, is a calcium modulating molecule, which is implicated in multiple cellular processes, including calcium signaling, cell growth, and proliferation, migration, adhesion, and apoptosis ( 46 , 47 ). The myristoyl group of CIB1 is sequestered into a hydrophobic pocket in the protein’s absence of intracellular Ca 2+ .…”
