The emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern

Abstract: Since emerging from Wuhan, China, in December of 2019, the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has been causing devastating severe respiratory infections in humans worldwide. With the disease spreading faster than the medical community could contain it, death tolls increased at an alarming rate worldwide, causing the World Health Organization to officially sanction the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak as a pandemic, leading to a state of worldwide lockdown for the majority of the year 2020. There have been reports of new strains of t… Show more

“…During the time of the final revision of this article, new variants derived from the lineage of B.1.1.7 has gained major attention notably due to the fact that they are vastly spreading in the UK, USA, and other locations (B.1.617.1, also known as Kappa; B.1.617.2 also known as “Delta” and B.1.618 also known as “triple mutant,”, as suspected to have evolved from B.1.617) 14 . In all cases, new mutations on the gene SPIKE were observed, further supporting our strategy for targeting this genomic region for variants surveillance.…”

“…HLA-DRb1* immunogenetic polymorphism has to be added to the very worrying S, M and E proteins' genetic variability or mutability inducing strain specific immunity (disturbingly being seen now) where some vaccines' potential effectiveness is bypassed or diminished by VOC strains (81).…”

“…More recently, variant SARS-CoV-2 viruses that are highly contagious and may evade immunity have emerged and spread worldwide [8][9][10]. But it has not been clarified whether tea ingredients also inactivate these variants.…”
