The Emerging Threat of Extractives Sector to Intact Forest Landscapes

Abstract: As demand for commodities increases globally, resource-rich countries are focal areas for industrial expansion. The extractives sector is driving unprecedented growth of infrastructure (e.g., roads, railways and pipelines) into sparsely populated regions, which contain some of the world’s remaining intact forests. Yet, the extent of the threat posed by an increased footprint of extractive industries is not well understood. Here we provide a novel global assessment of the potential threat posed to tropical Inta… Show more

“…Many areas of low human impact globally are targeted for exploitation particularly for minerals and fossil fuels. Grantham et al (2021) found that nearly a fifth of Intact Forest Landscapes in the tropics are currently designated as some form of extractive concession. We found similar patterns across our expansion areas many of which are impacted by infrastructure and extractive industries (SI Table 7).…”

“…According to a 2021 technical review by major conservation organizations, over 25 percent of customary territories are now threatened by commodity-driven development globally. 25 Much of the carbon stored within these lands, once lost to large-scale logging, agriculture, mining, and other processes leading to forest loss and land use and land cover changes, 26 will not be recoverable on timescales needed for avoiding dangerous climate and biodiversity impacts. 27 Communities demonstrate conservation leadership through their political struggles that aim to preserve ancestral knowledge and customary institutions, enable gender-sensitive and inclusive processes, and mobilize wide-scale advocacy for reforms or laws recognizing their fundamental human rights and identities.…”

“…Selon le rapport du WWF de 2018, très peu de sites ont déjà initié l'étape de production. Ainsi, si des réserves conséquentes sont découvertes, de gros dégâts environnementaux pourraient en découler (Grantham and Tibaldeschi 2018).…”
