The end of the beginning: Clinical Risk and the Journal of Patient Safety and Risk Management

Abstract

gave one of his most memorable speeches on 10 November 1942 at the Lord Mayor's Luncheon in London in response to a major Allied victory. Churchill declared: This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. These words also apply to the worldwide campaign to reduce harm and improve patient safety in health care. The battle is underway on many fronts. This issue marks the reinvention of Clinical Risk as the Journal of Patient Safety and Risk Management, a bimonthly journal published by SAGE and edited by Albert W. Wu from the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality and Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Journal promotes an evidence-based approach to understanding and improving patient safety, and multidisciplinary, empirical research on risk management and medico-legal issues. The Journal also acknowledges the centrality of the case study in both medical and medico-legal practice, and embraces a mixed-methods approach to addressing research questions. Patient safety has taken its place as a mainstream field of investigation and practice, and scholarship on the topic is growing rapidly. We hope that the Journal of Patient Safety and Risk Management will serve as a prominent venue for presenting the findings and applications of this research.
