Teetl’it Gwich’ins, NWT, Canada have consistently positioned trapping as a valuable exercise despite fluctuations in the price of furs. Materialist anthropological theories applied to the trapping economies of boreal forest First Nations created an image of trapping as an activity that necessarily leads to individualism, alienation, nucleated family structures and disenchantment because the furs were being produced for trade in the world economy. The rise of anti-fur sentiments and Canadian industrial intrusions helped cement this imaginary of the trapper as corrupt but, instead of simply being the victims of European domination, they were positioned to have abandoned the ‘traditional’ sensibilities of trust and reciprocity to adopt the cruelties of the steel trap. In contrast with these conjectural world histories, the author argues that trapping as it is practiced today is far from being an alienating practice. Indigenous trappers work with animals in ways that suit their pre-existing practices. In order to dispel the imaginary of the cruel dominator of animals, more recent thoughts on mutualism in human–animal relationships help but it would be difficult to argue that this activity does not require some deception. Indigenous trappers will create methods and tinker with their traps in ways that are counterintuitive to some of the human–environment dualisms found in the deception paradigm that posits that the human presence and the intention to trap is hidden from the animal and tricks it into making a fatal error. The author argues that trapping is effective and valued because it plays upon the signs and expectations which lie between the past and the present, and between domination and mutualism.

El reconocimiento constitucional de la diversidad cultural indígena en varios países de la región parece haber aparejado la irrupción de las periciales antropológicas en el sistema judicial: defensores privados y oficiales se muestran interesados en demostrar la inocencia de sus defendidos indígenas argumentando razones culturales. Por su parte los juzgadores comienzan a habituarse a la presencia de antropólogos que usando de su experticia les “traducen” en términos más o menos comprensibles quienes son y porque son como son los imputados indígenas. En otras ocasiones el conocimiento traducido se focaliza en los modos particulares de habitar y usar los recursos de la tierra por parte de las poblaciones indígenas con el fin de sustentar sus reivindicaciones territoriales. Este artículo se propone reflexionar sobre el valor del conocimiento antropológico en la justicia penal, el rol del antropólogo y el peso que en estos casos se otorga a una idea reificada de la cultura de los “otros”. En su desarrollo se analizan dos pericias realizadas por la autora del artículo.

Cet article présente une nouvelle perspective concernant un mode d'acquisition inuit en relation avec les rôles des sexes. Un examen approfondi des tournois de pêche dans l'Arctique canadien permet de souligner l’importance de cet aspect de la vie inuit. Jusqu'ici, de nombreuses études ethnographiques et recherches sur l’utilisation du territoire ont mis l’emphase sur la chasse. Le tournoi de pêche est un nouvel exemple d’acquisition. Il s’agit d’une activité à laquelle participent femmes, hommes, enfants et aînés. Le rôle de la femme dans l’Arctique a souvent été considéré sous l’angle de la division du travail ou bien sous celui de sa complémentarité au rôle de l’homme. Le tournoi de pêche est une occasion où les activités acquisitionnelles ne sont pas forcément organisées selon le sexe des individus et par conséquent cet aspect nous aide à comprendre de façon plus large les rôles des sexes. Le tournoi de pêche permet également de voir d’un point de vue ethnographique «la compétence» comme savoir traditionnel, éclairant la façon dont les Inuit, et par extension tous les chasseurs-cueilleurs, perçoivent le monde qui les entoure.This paper provides insight into Inuit procurement and gender roles. Through a focus on fishing derbies in the Canadian Arctic, this significant aspect of Inuit life is recognized. Many ethnographies and land use studies have previously concentrated on hunting. The fishing derby provides an alternative ethnographic example of procurement. It is an activity in which women, men, children, and elders participate. Women’s roles in the Arctic have often been discussed in terms of gender division of labour or in terms of their complementarity to men’s roles. The fishing derby demonstrates occasions when procurement activities are not necessarily divided along gender lines and thereby reveals a broader understanding of gender roles. The fishing derby is also an ethnographic example of skill as traditional knowledge and may inform how Inuit, and hunter-gatherers more generally, relate to the world around them
