The Energetics of Launching the Most Powerful Jets in Quasars: A Study of 3C 82

Abstract: 3C 82 at a redshift of 2.87 is the most distant 3C (Third Cambridge Catalogue) quasar. Thus, it is a strong candidate to have the most-luminous radio lobes in the universe. 3C 82 belongs to the class of compact steepspectrum radio sources. We use single-dish and interferometric radio observations in order to model the plasma state of these powerful radio lobes. It is estimated that the long-term time-averaged jet power required to fill these lobes with leptonic plasma is » ´-Q 2.66 1.33 10 erg s 47 1 , among … Show more

“…Nonetheless, we can estimate the relative contribution of mechanical feedback energy from AGN outflow activity. As a reference, one of the most powerful radio-loud QSOs, 3C82, has a jet power of the order of 10 47 ergs s −1 (Punsly et al 2020). Theoretical studies which aim to reproduce the formation of local massive elliptical galaxies have indicated an AGN mechanical outflow energy estimate of the order of 10 42−43 ergs, with a rate of ∼ 3×10 −5 Myr −1 (Gaspari et al 2012).…”

“…We have used this formalism to study a panoply of phenomena, major flares in a Galactic black hole, a γ-ray burst and flares in a radio quiet quasar (Punsly 2012(Punsly , 2019Reynolds et al 2009Reynolds et al , 2020. Most importantly, we used this method in Punsly et al (2020) to study the radio lobes in the super-luminous radio quasar, 3C 82 (which should be consulted for the details of the calculational method). The SSA turnover provides information on the size of the region that produces the preponderance of emission.…”

“…There is not a unique solution to the physical parameters of the North Lobe that recreate the fit in Figure 13. In this section we explore the solution space as calculated in (Punsly et al 2020).…”
