The Energy Efficiency Gap in Turkish Maritime Transportation

Abstract: The Turkish Merchant Shipping Industry has recently witnessed an increasing awareness of the importance to minimize environmental pollution and fuel oil consumption. Together with certain non-governmental organizations and media concerns about environmental protection, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been strict on controlling undesirable effects on the environment and, consequently, forcing shipping companies to minimize their emissions. Besides, today’s highly advanced technology companies … Show more

“…This may occur due to the significant increase in the cost of this policy on the water transport towards the most energy-efficient transport chains, which leads to a decrease in capital demand and hence labor employment. These results are consistent with the results of the study conducted by Konur et al [42]. Although a technological change in the transport sector is very costly in general, it is far greater for water transport.…”

“…Nevertheless, some authors have investigated the relation between fleets of existing ships and emerging indices: in cases of fleets of multi-purpose ships [4] and in cases of various ship classes [5]. Others have even recognised the 'energy efficiency gap' [6], labelling the industry's reluctance to address the use of novel technologies in order to reduce emissions.…”

“…Shipping is responsible for more than 5% of overall SO x emissions and 3% of overall CO 2 emissions [1]. To address this issue, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced several regulations aimed at promoting energy efficiency and reducing emissions from ships [6]. One such regulation is the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), which aims to improve the energy efficiency of existing ships and ensure that they meet minimum requirements for carbon emissions.…”
