The enigmatic phenotype: Relevant signs and symptoms in schizophrenia

Abstract: -Ever since schizophrenia was conceptualized by Kraepelin and Bleuler, attempts have been made to rearrange signs and symptoms in order to achieve an useful disease concept with consequences for outcome, prognosis, treatment response and etiology. Several procedures were used to describe relevant phenotypes of the disease. In the beginning, famous psychiatrists conceptualized definitions of schizophrenia which was followed by a consensus about the operational criteria of schizophrenia. Later, more emphasis was… Show more

“…Schizophrenia is characterized by tremendous heterogeneity in manifestations, course, as well as prognosis (Wijers, Verhoeven & Tuinier, 2005). This heterogeneity brings to the fore an interest in the role of personality and self-esteem in the adaptation process to schizophrenia.…”

“…Schizophrenia is characterized by tremendous heterogeneity in manifestation, course, and prognosis (Davidson & McGlashan, 1997;Wijers, Verhoeven & Tuinier, 2005). Moreover, in addition to positive and negative symptoms, which constitute the core of this serious mental illness, people with schizophrenia are also exhibiting elevated levels of depression and suicidality (Birchwood, Iqbal & Upthegrove, 2005) and high prevalence of physical illness (Goldman, 1999).…”
