The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study: study design

Abstract: The primary objective of this multicenter, multinational, epidemiological study is the identification of infectious agents, dietary factors, or other environmental exposures that are associated with increased risk of autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Factors affecting specific phenotypic manifestations such as early age of onset or rate of progression or with protection from the development of T1DM will also be identified. The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) is an ob… Show more

“…The primary objective of TEDDY is to identify genetic, gestational, and environmental risk factors for islet autoantibodies, type 1 diabetes, or both in children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes on the basis of their two HLA haplotypes (HLA genotype). 3 Because the major HLA genotypes that confer a risk of type 1 diabetes also confer a risk of celiac disease, we explored the genetic and environmental contributions to the development of celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease in this cohort.…”

“…Exposure in children with a rapid progression to clinical diabetes may possibly take place at a higher dose or in a shorter time window before the appearance of islet autoimmunity. We therefore examined the history of infections and fever and analysed plasma samples by unbiased deep sequencing for the presence of viruses in the period around the initiation of islet autoimmunity in children who transitioned within 6 months from autoimmunity to disease in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study [13]. …”

“…A multimember multinational epidemiological study, TEDDY 'The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young', is in progress to identify the infectious agents, dietary factors and other environmental factors associated with an increased risk of autoimmunity and T1D [45]. TEDDY is an observational cohort study in which newborns younger than 4 months and with the high-risk HLA alleles in the general population, or with firstdegree relatives who have T1D, are enrolled.…”
