The epidemiology of anorexia nervosa

Abstract: SynopsisAll patients with anorexia nervosa were extracted from three psychiatric case registers— North-East Scotland, Camberwell, and Monroe County. The average incidence varied from 0·37 per 100,000 population per year in Monroe County to 1·6 per 100,000 in North-East Scotland, in all three areas the number of cases reported per year was increasing, and in Camberwell, but not in Monroe County or North-East Scotland, there was a significant excess of patients from middle-class backgrounds.

“…Three psychiatric case registers have provided demographic data on anorexia nervosa: North-East Scotland (Kendell et al 1973;Szmukler et al 1986), Monroe County, New York State (Kendell et al 1973;Jones et al 1980) and Camberwell in London (Kendell et al 1973). The data substantiate clinical impressions that anorexia nervosa is a disorder primarily of young women albeit with a two-fold variation in sex ratio between registers.…”

“…Counter to clinical impression, little evidence has emerged in support of an association with higher social class. The one register reporting a significant relationship was based on only seven patients with anorexia nervosa (Kendell et al 1973).…”

“…He evaluated the incidence of AN in Sweden over the period from 1930 to 1960 and noted a sharp increase in incidence during those three decades. In subsequent years other researchers have followed his line of inquiry in greater depth, analyzing psychiatric records from several hospitals (Jones et al, 1980;Kendell et al, 1973). Commensurate with Theander's (1970) results, it was reported that the number of cases of AN had increased the decades between 1960 and 1980.…”
