The epidemiology of dental caries and its impact on the operative dentistry curriculum

Abstract: Existing demographic and epidemiologic data are used to project the number of hours of operative dentistry treatment needed by all age groups in the year 2000. The findings suggest that calls to reduce the operative dentistry curriculum because of a decline in the need for single tooth restorative services may be premature, despite the recent caries decline in children and adolescents. The need for operative dentistry treatment is projected to increase until the 21st century, and the nature of this need has im… Show more

“…Stratford residents had a significantly higher fluoride content of cementum when compared with residents of non-fluoridated Chatham (Banting and Stamm, 1982). A greater understanding of fluoride's effect on root caries will assist in prevention and control of this condition, which is likely to become a greater problem in the future (Douglass and Gammon, 1984;Burt, 1985; Katz, 1985).…”

“…La QA se presenta a menudo en personas expuestas a la radiación UV debido al trabajo al aire libre (8,2,21). Diferentes estudios en los que se han analizado distintas ocupaciones coinciden en que es más importante el número de horas de exposición solar que el trabajo analizado como factor de riesgo (22)(23)(24)(25). Es decir, la exposición acumulativa a la radiación UV es la causa más importante de QA (8).…”

“…If this is occurring, the impact on the practice of dentistry will be profound. Even with the present older age-cohorts, there is some evidence that caries experience is increasing, and service demands are highly likely to increase (Douglass and Gammon, 1984). There has been some epidemiological study among older age-groups, both descriptive (Beck etaL, 1984(Beck etaL, , 1985Hand and Whitehall, 1986) and analytical Burt et al, 1985), but the oral health of older persons still requires further study.…”
