The epidemiology of schistosomiasis in Egypt: Fayoum Governorate.

Abstract: Abstract. Health questionnaires and parasitologic examinations of urine and stool were performed upon a stratified random sample of 7,710 individuals from 1,109 households in 21 rural communities in Fayoum Governorate, Egypt in 1992 to investigate the prevalence of, risk factors for, and changing pattern of, infection with Schistosoma sp. in the governorate. “…As expected, the Wadi Halfa population had a higher prevalence than the Kulubnarti population. This follows the pattern of higher prevalence in populations living near annual irrigation schemes in modern populations (Kloos et al,1983; Abdel‐Wahab et al,2000; Steinmann et al,2006).…”

“…Schistosomiasis mansoni in Egypt is highest near the Nile Delta region and decreases upstream. Infections are rarely found in modern populations living along the Nile in Upper Egypt and Northern Sudan; only in the Fayoum governate did prevalence reach 4.3% (Abdel‐Wahab et al,2000). However, prevalence estimates between 40 and 50% have been made for populations living near recently implemented irrigation schemes in the region (El‐Sayed et al,1995).…”

“…Alcohol consumption was not common in this study group. In other endemic areas schistosomiasis accounts for 22% as a cause of PPF (39) . There is therefore an increase need for schistosomiasis control programs, in addition to environmental and behavioral modifications.…”
