“…In this study, the CO 2 evolution study also known as the strum test was conducted to prove the mineralization of the tested MPs particles. NJD1 for the same type of MPs particles after 120 days (Jayan et al, 2023;Rose et al, 2020). The production of CO 2 in this study is an evidence of the complete degradation of PE, PP, and PS which was also highlighted in their weight loss, and the assimilation by the SHBF2 strain.…”

“…The alkaline condition created by the neutrophilic SHBF2 was due to the usage of organic C from the PE, PP, and PS particles that produce basic alkaline protease from the long-chained sugar of MPs particles and resulted in the gradual pH increase of the MSM media (Samanta et al, 2020). Unlike most of the studies, a highly acidic state (7.25 to 4.6) over 120 days of incubation of B. cereus NJD1 has also been seen while using LDPE as a sole C source (Jayan et al, 2023). The reason behind the acidic condition is not clear from that study.…”

“…Current research on polyethylene decomposition is mainly toward low-density polyethylene. Many polyethylene-degrading microorganisms have been reported (Gao et al 2022;Jayan et al 2023;Kumar Sen and Raut 2015). Some show capability in metabolizing linear alkanes with a membranous enzyme alkane hydroxylase, a member of the alkB family (EC 1.14.15.3) that plays a key role in the aerobic degradation of alkanes and β-oxidation of fatty acids in bacteria.…”
