The Essential Oil of Artemisia argyi H.Lév. and Vaniot Attenuates NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation in THP-1 Cells

Abstract: Artemisia argyi H. Lév. and Vaniot is a traditional medical herb that has been used for a long time in China and other Asian counties. Essential oil is the main active fraction of Artemisia argyi H. Lév. and Vaniot, and its anti-inflammatory potential has been observed in vitro and in vivo. Here, we found that the essential oil of Artemisia argyi H. Lév. and Vaniot (EOAA) inhibited monosodium urate (MSU)- and nigericin-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation. EOAA suppressed caspase-1 and IL-1β processing and py… Show more

“…This is consistent with its dual inhibition on the NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasomes since ASC is not required for the assembly and activation of the NLRC4 inflammasome (Kwak et al, 2018). Artemisia and their extracts have become an attractive area of natural product medicine and several other species have been investigated for their anti-inflammatory properties and suspected roles in the inflammasome pathways (Chen et al, 2021;Manayi et al, 2021;Wang Q. et al, 2021).…”

“…Sesquiterpene lactone from AA can inhibit the production of NO ( Xue et al, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2023 ) and the activity of COXs ( Zhang et al, 2019 ). Sesquiterpenoids and essential oils not only have noticeable inhibitory effects on tumor cells ( Zhang et al, 2018 ; Zhang et al, 2021 ; Li et al, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2023 ) but also have apparent anti-inflammatory activity ( Ge et al, 2016 ; Chen et al, 2017 ; Chen et al, 2021 ; Li et al, 2023 ). Polysaccharide from AA has obvious antibacterial ( Tseng et al, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2023a ;) and antitumor activity ( Bao et al, 2013 ).…”

“…Finally, the antioxidant mechanism of AL was explored. The previous study found that the supercritical extract of A. argyi essential oil can act on the NF-κB signaling pathway [ 43 ]. NF-κB may affect ROS levels by influencing the expression of antioxidant proteins such as GPX1 and SOD2 [ 44 ].…”
