A biological method for the determination of small quantities of toxic compounds in sea water using Chlarnydomonas as an indicator organism is described. The method is sufficiently accurate for concentrations in the region of 5 x 10W p.p.m. The value of the method is its applicability to a range of toxic compounds for which no convenient methods of estimation exist, particularly in low concentrations.
