The Estimation of Corrosion Behavior of NiTi and NiTiNb Alloys Using Dynamic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Abstract: Linear anodic potentiodynamic polarization and dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (DEIS) measurements were carried out for NiTi and NiTiNb alloys in physiological 0.9 wt% NaCl solution in order to assess their corrosion resistance. DEIS measurements were performed from open circuit potential to dissolution potential. It was shown that the impedance measurements in potentiodynamic conditions allow simultaneous investigation of changes in passive layer structure. e impedance spectra of various pote… Show more

“…Since nickel elution produces severe allergic issues, many of the research works on NiTi alloys were focused on improving the biocompatibility and corrosion resistance by suitable surface modification techniques [7][8][9]. The corrosion behavior of the alloy has been analyzed in various simulated body fluids such as Tyrode's, Hanks' , phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and 0.9 wt.% NaCl solutions [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Results of these studies showed that the electrochemical behavior and the nickel release rate vary from one type of solution to the other although the chloride content in these physiological solutions remained almost the same.…”

“…EIS is very important technique in studying corrosion and corrosion inhibition of metals and alloys in corrosive environments [23][24][25]. The EIS method has been successfully employed in explaining the inhibition of iron and steel alloys in aqueous media [23][24][25][26][27]. The EIS Nyquist plots obtained for the cobalt free maraging steel electrode at open circuit potential after 0 min immersion in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 containing (1) 0.0 PHTA, (2) 1.0 mM PHTA, and (3) 5.0 mM PHTA are depicted in Figure 5.…”

“…In order to overcome this issue, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has to be carried out together with polarization curve measurements. EIS is a well-established technique for a complete analysis of electrochemical device behavior, but it has also been used in other fields of applied sciences in order to evaluate, for instance, the corrosion behavior of stainless steel [21] and different metallic alloys [22,23] at various operating conditions and in different media and even for biomedical applications [24].…”
