The Estimation of Secondary Production of the Marine Bivalve Spisula subtruncata (DA COSTA) in the Area of the Po River Delta

Abstract: The secondary production of Spisula subtruncata (somatic production) is calculated in the framework of a benthic monitoring study in a coastal area. The temporal trends of density, biomass and growth increments are examined in the three year-classes present. These are compared to certain physical and chemical parameters.

“…The shell length estimated for S. subtruncata from the VBGF at age I-III was 15.5, 22.2 and 25.1 mm L, respectively. The maximum age observed in other studies for this species was 1 year in the Ligurian Sea (Fraschetti et al, 1997), 2-3 years in the Adriatic Sea (Po river; Ambrogi and Occhipinti Ambrogi, 1985), 4 years in Wadden Sea (Cardoso et al, 2007) and in Belgian coast (Degraer, 1999) (Table 4). The growth performance index φ of the S. subtruncata in the study area was 2.787, reinforcing the Table 3 Growth parameters estimated and growth performance index (φ ) of S. subtruncata in two different geographical areas…”
