The Ethics of Multiplayer Game Design and Community Management

Abstract: Game industry professionals are frequently implementing new methods of addressing ethical issues related to in-game toxicity and disruptive player behaviours associated with online multiplayer games. However, academic work on these behaviours tends to focus on the perspectives of players rather than the industry. To fully understand the ethics of multiplayer games and promote ethical design, we must examine the challenges facing those designing multiplayer games through an ethical lens. To this end, this paper… Show more

“…Voice processing plays an important role as visual information processing in modern multimedia editing [8]. Voice processing is also an important part in video editing, and plays an important role in video text translation [9] and game design [10]. The audio from the video and then translate the speech voice to text for further multimedia processing [11], which is considered as a significant application in voice recognition.…”

“…Furthermore, their ability to accurately and consistently identify harmful behavior can be inconsistent, leading to disparities in moderation. 14 Earlier works on combating hate speech through traditional machine learning (ML) algorithms like logistic regression (LR) have proved beneficial; however, it suffers from the problem of the linear decision boundary; moreover, feature selection and dataset balancing must be made precisely to obtain optimal results. The highly competitive, immersive, interactive and aggressive environment of virtual gaming has led to increased transmission of hate speech online and calls for more regressive hate speech detection measures.…”

“…With the influx of new users in virtual spaces, it is challenging for human moderators to keep up with identifying and regulating harmful behavior. Furthermore, their ability to accurately and consistently identify harmful behavior can be inconsistent, leading to disparities in moderation 14 .
