The ethmoidal region of Dibamus taylori (Squamata: Dibamidae), with a phylogenetic hypothesis on dibamid relationships within Squamata

Abstract: The nasal capsule and nasal sac of Dibamus taylori are described based on a plate reconstruction of serially sectioned material and are compared with several other squamate taxa. The ethmoidal region of D. taylori is characterized by a short nasal vestibule, a well developed concha, a much reduced and nearly functionless Jacobson's organ, an incomplete nasal roof, and a true nasopharyngeal duct with a complicated secondary palate. Cartilaginous and epithelial structures of the ethmoidal region provide many inf… Show more

“…Except for the nasal capsule (Hallermann, 1998), the otico-occipital region is arguably the most complex structure in the squamate skull. Some introductory remarks are therefore appropriate in order to place this study in its proper context.…”

“…Gekkota (Lee 1998;Evans & Barbadilo, 2008), Lacertidae (Schwenk, 1988;Wu, 1996), Scincidae (Conrad, 2008), Dibamidae (Greer, 1985b;Hallermann, 1998;Kearney, 2003;Rieppel & Zaher, 2000a;Lee, 2000;Gauthier et al, 2012) and snakes (Rage, 1982). However, recent studies based on molecular and morphological analyses (total evidence) suggest that Amphisbaenia are related to Lacertidae (Townsend et al, 2004;Vidal & Hedges, 2005;Vidal & Hedges, 2008;Wiens, 2010Wiens, , 2012Müller et al, 2011;Streicher & Wiens, 2017).…”
