The EUSO@TurLab project in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program

Abstract: The EUSO@TurLab project aims at performing experiments to reproduce Earth UV emissions as seen from a low Earth orbit by the planned missions of the JEM-EUSO program. It makes use of the TurLab facility, which is a laboratory, equipped with a 5 m diameter and 1 m depth rotating tank, located at the Physics Department of the University of Turin. All the experiments are designed and performed based on simulations of the expected response of the detectors to be flown in space. In April 2016 the TUS detector and m… Show more

“…Prior to the launch, the instrument underwent a series of integration and acceptance tests in Rome, Moscow, and Baikonur, where it was placed in the uncrewed Soyuz capsule. A systematic test of the acquisition logic was performed at the TurLab facility [17] of the University and at the Astrophysical Observatory (INAF-OATo) [18] in Turin. After launch, an end-to-end in-flight calibration of the Mini-EUSO detector has been performed by assembling different UV-flasher systems on ground in Japan, Italy, and France and by firing them in various observational campaigns.…”

“…EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) will detect the cosmic ray showers in the Earth atmosphere from balloons and circum-terrestrial satellites [18] (Figure 3). A lunar EUSO will have a more global view than satellite- When a star is on the line joining a lunar telescope to the center of Earth or very close to it, the Earth atmosphere acts as Earth-sized converging lens [19].…”
