The Evaluation of Renal Iron Deposition With a 3 Tesla MRI Device in Beta-Thalassemia Major Patients

Abstract: Background and objectiveBeta-thalassemia is the most frequent monogenic disease in the world. In beta-thalassemia major (BTM) patients, blood transfusions for severe anemia usually cause iron overload, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to examine the iron overload in the kidneys of BTM patients with a 3 Tesla (3T) MRI device and assess the relationship between iron overload in the liver and heart as well as serum ferritin levels. MethodsThis was a retrospective study coverin… Show more

“…Notably, kidney iron deposition tends to be milder relative to the heart and liver, and measurements conducted with 3.0 Tesla MRI devices yield more accurate information. 171 Diffusion tensor imaging techniques offer quantitative detection of early kidney injury by correlating tissue contrast with T1 and T2 relaxation times and proton density within each pixel. These techniques examine the diffusion correlation of water molecules within the tissue, complementing the effective assessment of iron deposition by MRI.…”
