Piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a methylenedioxyphenyl compound, is primarily used as a synergist in combination with space spray, residual and admixture products for the control of insect pests in or around domestic and commercial premises, especially food preparation areas. Also, tetramethrin is known as a knockdown agent on target organism and it is generally used with piperonyl butoxide. In this study, effects of piperonyl butoxide and tetramethrin combinations on biological activities of synthetic pyrethroids, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, and permethrin against different housefly (Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758) populations were evaluated. In addition, the biological efficiency of the insecticides used in the study, insecticide + PBO and insecticide + PBO + tetramethrin combinations, against the WHO standard sensitive housefly population and housefly populations collected from different parts of Turkey were compared.Results showed that PBO extensively promoted the ratio of knockdown and killing effect values of the insecticides. The results also indicated that PBO and PBO + tetramethrin combinations moderately reduced the knockdown effect times of all formulation in all housefly populations. The knockdown effect times were more decreased by insecticide + PBO + tetramethrin combinations than insecticides that are used alone and insecticide + PBO combinations. Individual and synergistic toxicity of solanaceous glycoalkaloids against two coleopteran stored-product insects

Toxicity of solanaceous glycoalkaloids against stored-grain insects was investigated under laboratory conditions. The total glycoalkaloids (TGAs), a-chaconine and a-solanine from potatoes, Solanum tuberosum L. and a-tomatine from tomatoes, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. were isolated and tested in this bioassay. Their acute and residual toxicity were assessed against the rust red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), and the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). All compounds were tested either individually or as binary mixtures. Results revealed considerable toxicity of the tested glycoalkaloids against the target insects. When adults of S. oryzae were exposed to a dry-film residue of these phytochemicals, the total glycoalkaloids (TGAs) fraction was the most toxic, followed by a-solanine, a-chaconine, and a-tomatine with LC 50s of (38.6 and 22.1), (48.2 and 38.9), (52.00 and 41.6), and (82.3 and 67.00) lg/cm 2 at 24 and 48 h post-treatment, respectively. The order of toxicity against T. castaneum in a descending order was TGAs [ a-chaconine [ a-solanine [ a-tomatine. All compounds were more toxic when insects were fed grains treated with these phytochemicals (LC 50s of TGAs were 7.4 and 16.2 mg/kg grains at 48 h post-treatment against S. oryzae and T. castaneum, respectively. All compounds, particularly the TGAs, exhibited promising residual toxicity effects. Toxicity of glycoalkaloids was exceeded when tested as binary mixtures indicating their synergistic interaction. The study recommends the use of glycoalkaloids of Solanaceae as biorationals and natural leads to protect stored grains from insect infestation.

Por meio da relação das CL 50 e DL 50 dos inseticidas tomados isoladamente e de suas respectivas combinações sinérgicas com o óleo essencial e o PBO, foram obtidos os fatores de sinergismo (FSs) para comparação entre si. O coeficiente angular das curvas de dose/concentração-mortalidade foi utilizado para determinar a toxicidade relativa promovida pelos sinérgicos e a homogeneidade de resposta. Por contato residual, evidenciou-se significativa potencialização dos inseticidas comerciais formulados com misturas prontas de tiametoxan/lambdacialotrina (FS= 4,8) e teflubenzuron/alfacipermetrina (FS = 968,3 -1.294,4), quando combinados com óleo essencial de P. aduncum. Já por contato tópico, ocorreu significativa potencialização somente com a mistura teflubenzuron/alfacipermetrina (FS= 1,(6)(7)8), quando combinada com óleo essencial. As combinações sinérgicas apresentaram homogeneidade de resposta tanto por contato tópico como residual, para pelo menos uma combinação sinérgica com o óleo essencial de P. aduncum.
